Compatibility: The most important performance parameter to be considered in formulating an additive in an application is compatibility with the polymer that is being used. The type of test that is used depends on the application. From a theoretical standpoint the solubility parameters of the additive and polymer should be within 1.5 Hildebrand units. In waterborne systems, the HLB (hydrophilic/lipophilic balance) of the polymer emulsion and plasticizer need to be matched to provide optimum performance.
Efficiency: Normally a plasticizer’s efficiency is judged by the amount required to obtain the desired softness. However, any required performance parameter could be considered an efficiency parameter. These parameters vary by end application. In Adhesives, they include Open-Time and Set-Time; for Plastisol applications, Rheology is key; in Coatings, Film Formation is critical. Knowing the required parameter and understanding how to balance them with the other formulation demands is the objective of Genovique’s formulary approach.
Permanence is a measure of how long a plasticizer stays in the polymer. This is typically measured through volatility, the amount of plasticizer lost over time. The degree of permanence required varies by application. In extruded PVC used for beverage applications permanence is critical to avoid contamination. In some coating applications high volatility enables the use of harder polymers which provide a more durable finish. Volatility can be measured on the neat plasticizer or the finished product.
